Also, an episode of severe sepsis places you at higher risk of future infections. Severe sepsis is defined by dysfunction of one of the major organ systems or unexplained metabolic acidosis. The inflammatory reaction is mediated by the release of cytokines, including tumor necrosis factor-alpha, interleukins, and prostaglandins, from neutrophils and macrophages. Sepsis is a clinical syndrome of life-threatening organ dysfunction caused by a dysregulated response to infection.

The gold standard for finding the causing pathogen in a blood sample is blood culture, which may take hours to days. Shortening the time to diagnosis would significantly reduce mortality. To replace the time-consuming blood culture we are developing a method to directly separate bacteria from red sepsis diagnostics by detection of bacteria in blood [13]. Acoustic forces have also been used for noncontact microfluidic trapping and particle enrichment [14], mas- resonances suitable for successful acoustophoresis in this acoustically soft system. In Sec. VI, we present the results resonances suitable for successful acoustophoresis in this acoustically soft system. In SectionVI, we present the results of a more realistic model in three dimensions (3D) of the all-polymer device, and discuss them in relation to preliminary experimental results. Finally, in SectionVII, we summarize and discuss the obtained results.

The EU-funded ACUSEP project aimed to provide a proof-of-concept for new sepsis diagnostics that can detect very few bacteria in the blood within hours. Sepsis may cause abnormal blood clotting that results in small clots or burst blood vessels that damage or destroy tissues. Most people recover from mild sepsis, but the mortality rate for septic shock is about 40%. Also, an episode of severe sepsis places you at higher risk of future infections.
